Nickelodeon’s The Splat is going to be flat out AWESOME. When rumors broke out stating that Nickelodeon would be creating a channel dedicated to its 90’s programming – similar to how Cartoon network handles some of it classics with boomerang – my face broke out into an uncontrollable smile.  I could not stop smiling and laughing at all the memories that 90’s Nickelodeon brought back.

splat-nickelodeonWell, in reality the speculation that Nickelodeon was doing a dedicated channel was just that- speculation. However, what they are doing is almost as cool as Nickelodeon will be airing an eight-hour block of ‘90s TV programming on TeenNick from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. ET.

According to the network’s official release, “Nickelodeon will throw back to the ‘90s every day with the launch of ‘The Splat,’ a new multiscreen content destination spanning television, seven social media platforms, and a dedicated website aggregating the most loved Nick content from the 1990s and beyond.”

In case you’re too young to remember 90’s Nickelodeon or too old to care. I am here to elaborate on just how monumental this occasion is.

Well first off seeing all the old cartoons such as Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Hey Arnold…just does something incredible to me. Come on you all know what I’m talking about…it is not just me. Just mentioning these names bring back memories of me and my siblings eating buttery popcorn sitting on the carpet watching the cartoons and laughing up a storm at them.

It’s simply amazing how the old-school animation style and variety of design are still attention catching to this day.

So exactly what shows can you expect to see when The Splat premieres on Monday, Oct. 5?

All That, The Angry Beavers, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, CatDog, Clarissa Explains It All, Hey Arnold!, Hey Dude, Kenan & Kel, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Rocko’s Modern Life, Rugrats, Salute Your Shorts, and The Wild Thornberrys.

Do I have your attention now?

Personally, Rugrats was one of my favorites, with an all-time great theme song. Add to that the great plot of babies always up to something or trying to solve an adventure and you have pure gold. It is truly an art to create such strong animated characters that have their own personality which all work well together in the cartoon.

These characters were so iconic, that to this day I can still remember begging “Mommy, Daddy can I have this please!!” when watching Nickelodeon when the commercials for toys such as a Tommy, Chuckie or Angelica doll would come on.

Another good one being brought to a new generation is the sketch comedy show All That  a comedy show that gave us Keenan Thompson and Amanda Bynes.

Talk about laughing till you fall out…that show was absolutely hilarious, with catch phrases such as “Welcome to the good burger, home of the good burger, may I take your order’.

One of the most amazing things about these shows and many of the other 90’s Nick shows were their ability attract children while at the same time entertaining adults.

It’s a big deal if a show can catch the attention of an adult considering adults are the hard ones to please (as I am learning when I watch my son’s television shows today and need clothes pins to keep my eyelids open).

Splat is set up to be a huge success based on the Twitter response when the rumor got cranked up.

Now that it is official, you can expect that a huge number of fans will be tuning their televisions to TeenNick from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. ET as The Splat becomes official bedtime programming.

“Our research has told us that there are these cycles in time, and right now we are sitting squarely in this nostalgia for the ‘90s era,” Keith Dawkins, senior vice president and general manager of Nicktoons, TeenNick and Nick Jr, told The Los Angeles Times.

“We had a generation of former Nickelodeon kids who grew up on ‘Rugrats,’ ‘Doug,’ and ‘Ren & Stimpy,” and whatever else. We were the only brand speaking to them in a very unique way, and now that generation are twenty somethings and older and they’re working and they long for those shows that take them back to that time when their worlds weren’t overrun with adult problems.”
